Profitability based on sustainable development

The expansion goes beyond a simple increase in infrastructure. It also incorporates environmentally-friendly practices, including dredging of the port to reclaim 20,000 cubic meters of sediment. Some of this material will be reused to combat coastal erosion, while the finer deposits will be used for port development.
Economic leverage for the region
Mayor Edmond Jorda emphasizes the need for this project to ensure the long-term viability of the port. In addition to recreational boaters, the port is a hub of economic activity. Local businesses, such as shipyards, shops and maintenance services, will benefit directly from this modernization. The aim is to maintain competitiveness with other ports in the region and preserve the jobs associated with this activity.
Financial benefits expected

The work is being financed by a combination of public funds and local investment. Once completed, the extension should boost revenue from berth rentals and port services. By attracting new yachtsmen and professionals, Sainte-Marie-la-Mer hopes to strengthen its appeal as a tourist destination and generate sustainable income for the commune.
A project validated by the courts
Despite protests by a local residents' association, the courts confirmed the legality of the project in 2025, following an initial ruling in 2022. Declared to be in the public interest in 2020, the port extension can now move forward without legal obstacles.
A long-term appeal challenge

With this extension, Sainte-Marie-la-Mer is taking a forward-looking approach. Between environmental preservation and economic development, the modernization of the port aims to ensure the long-term viability of this essential facility, while contributing to the dynamism of the region. It's an ambitious gamble that should enhance the attractiveness of the Catalan coastline for years to come.
