A response tailored to the needs of professionals
The issue of abandoned boats is a real headache for shipyards, ports and other yachting professionals. These vessels, left without an identifiable owner or without payment of storage fees, clutter up spaces, generate significant costs and raise complex legal issues.
To remedy this problem, FIN relied on the Law for the Blue Economy of June 20, 2016, which introduces a dedicated legal procedure. From now on, professionals can apply to the Tribunal d'instance for an order to sell at public auction. If no bidders come forward, the law provides for the vessel to be passed directly to a company specializing in dismantling.
A turnkey solution
Although this procedure represents a major step forward, it can be costly and time-consuming to implement. Aware of the difficulties encountered by its members, FIN has developed a comprehensive package that takes care of all the necessary administrative and legal procedures.
Available exclusively to FIN member companies, this service is invoiced at ?650 ex-VAT per vessel, well below the ?2,500 to ?3,000 that a conventional procedure could cost if carried out independently. This fee includes all stages of the process, from the court application to the handover of the vessel to a dismantling company if no bidder is found.
A successful experiment
Prior to its official launch, the system underwent an experimental phase in the second half of 2019. The results were deemed conclusive, both in terms of legal security and operational efficiency. This has enabled us to validate the system's relevance and make it available to members from 2020.
An environmental and economic challenge
In addition to providing an economic solution for the industry, this scheme is also environmentally friendly. By making it easier to take charge of end-of-life vessels, it limits the risk of pollution and encourages the use of dismantling solutions that comply with current standards.
To benefit from this solution, FIN member companies can go directly to the Federation's website, where all the necessary information and procedures are detailed.
Thanks to this initiative, FIN enables its members to manage derelict vessels more serenely, while reinforcing their regulatory compliance and commitment to a sustainable blue economy.
