Biodegradable thermoplastic tarpaulins
US company Bioaqualife has patented a new material for the manufacture of thermoplastic tarpaulins. Thanks to a specific additive, the manufacturer claims that its protective tarpaulins degrade naturally once deposited in a landfill or in nature. In fact, when placed in an environment rich in bacteria and microbes, the additive attracts them. As they digest it, they break down the structure of the material, releasing, according to Bioaqualife, only organic compounds and gas, with no microplastics. Unlike other biodegradable plastics such as PLA, no heat or oxygen is required.
Suitable for use on the water
Thermobagging is a common practice for transporting new boats or for winter protection, generating a significant amount of waste, with the potential loss of various small pieces to the environment. Bioaqualife has tested its solution and its durability for recreational use. In particular, the company has successfully tarpaulinned the sailing and motor boats of American Magic, the American challenger in the 37th America's Cup, for transport to Europe.
