Accord Tohatsu - Ilmor Marine
Two motorization specialists announce an agreement to enter the electric outboard motor market. Japan's Tohatsu, with over a century's experience in marine motorization, has joined forces with American Ilmor Marine, which has been active in the pleasure boating sector for several decades, and has been recognized for its performance in motor racing since its creation in 1984. Together, the two OEMs aim to create a range of electric marine products, drawing on Tohatsu's knowledge of the marine market and Ilmor's engineering capabilities.
Engines as early as 2024
The first 6 kW outboard motor has been announced for 2024. First images have been unveiled. These appear to be close to the outboard motor already presented by Ilmor at the last two METSTrade equipment shows in 2022 and 2023.
Tohatsu electric outboards will feature electric trim and lift, as well as a touch-screen control panel and various base and propeller length options.
The first engines are expected to hit Canadian, American and European markets as early as 2024.
Another electric alliance
The agreement between Ilmor and Tohatsu once again demonstrates the dynamism of electric outboards, which are attracting traditional combustion engine manufacturers, as demonstrated by the recent yamaha takes over Torqeedo the release of Mercury's Avator ranges and the announced arrivals of Honda and Suzuki.
