Customs taxes on American pleasure boats: New reprieve

In the trade dispute between the United States and the European Union over import taxes, a transitional solution has once again been found. A move welcomed by the European Boating Industry, which urges further progress towards a definitive solution.

Moratorium on import taxes on pleasure boats

The latent trade conflict between the United States and the European Union since Donald Trump's term in office, centered on steel and aluminum and then aircraft, has taken a new twist. The retaliatory tariffs put in place by the European Union, notably on pleasure boats, had been suspended in 2021. However, the agreement reached was due to expire on December 31, 2023. Industry associations on both sides of the Atlantic, the European Boating Industry and the National Marine Manufacturer Association, warned in early December of the risk of a return to import taxes . The European Union has finally announced an extension of the suspension until March 31, 2025.

Relief and a call for a definitive end to tariffs

EBI welcomed the 15-month extension of the tariff suspension, "good news for European importers and distributors of US boats, as well as for the entire value chain in Europe and the USA." However, the European trade association is still calling for a definitive resolution to the conflict, in order to "nurture a stable, mutually beneficial trading environment."
