Electric motor: Mercury partners with Chinese specialist to expand its offering

Engine manufacturer Mercury Marine has signed a partnership with Jing-Jin Electric, a Chinese expert in electric motors. They will work together on a complementary range of Avator outboards, which should open up the field of motorized boats.

Partnership between Mercury Marine and JJE

Mercury Marine unveiled on May 18, 2023 the signing of a partnership with the Chinese company Jing Jin Electric - JJE. The subsidiary of the Brunswick group is joining forces with the Chinese equipment manufacturer, which is active worldwide in electric mobility. Together they will develop a range of high voltage electric marine motors.

Expanding Mercury Marine's electric motorization offer

With this partnership, Mercury Marine intends to continue and expand its presence in the electric motor market for recreational boating, which began with the launch, independent of this agreement, of the Avator low-power outboards, whose range should now include five 48V models. With JJE's higher voltage technologies, the partners will be able to tackle higher power levels, as Perissa Bailey, Mercury Marine's vice president of e-Solutions, points out. "We are excited to partner with JJE as we co-develop and produce the next evolution of high-voltage propulsion systems for the Navy and expand our ACES strategy globally."

For JJE, which is mainly based in the automotive sector and works with Stellantis and Allison Transmission, this is an opening to a new market. While the Chinese company brings its expertise in electric drive lines, Mercury Marine will make available its knowledge of hydrodynamics, propellers and its test facilities, particularly in noise and vibration management.
