Each mast and rig is intimately linked to the boat, by its dimensions, but also by its uses or the price positioning of the sailboat. This is why VMG Soromap supports its customers as early as possible, thanks to its integrated design office. Eric Gibaud, from the design office explains: "The specifications are established upstream by the shipyards, then confirmed with the taking into account of the fundamentals to be observed: the sail plan, the sail reduction tables... The common objective is to ensure that our finalized proposals for the mast are in exact accordance with the expectations of the shipyards and architects

From the preliminary project to the sea trial

Solicited by the major shipyards, VMG Soromap is involved from the pre-project stage, in a constant exchange with the architects and the builder. The process takes the team right up to the launch of the boat to validate the prototype of future production yachts, as Christophe Troger, another member of the design office, explains: "At the beginning of the project reviews, the architects' plans are analyzed for the right choice of profiles and components. Subsequently, discussions are held between the various Technical Managers and Directors to optimize the masts, booms, rigging and other peripherals, in accordance with the expectations of the construction site. The mast plan and associated peripherals are then drawn up for technical validation by the client before production begins. The prototypes are followed internally, from the beginning to the test on the water. The definition time is very variable depending on the content of the preliminary project and the progress made in terms of precise data used to define the project. As regards the work carried out in the design office upstream of the construction site, the difference can range from a few weeks to several months, up to more than a year. These delays are linked to fluctuations in specifications, depending on market changes, involving several redesigns and dimensioning."

VMG Soromap works with sailmakers during the finalization of projects. This allows the company to adapt its designs for the specific integration of equipment, with the objective of achieving a harmonious harmony of the structure and sails.

When necessary, VMG Soromap develops customized solutions for projects. Designed for specific customer needs, these can be integrated into the catalog for use on other boats.

Combining internal expertise and external control

VMG Soromap has the tools and skills to design and calculate its profiles and rigging. However, the company is not reluctant to rely on external resources, as a guarantee of neutrality and security. A point that Christophe Troger of the design office emphasizes in conclusion: "The investigation and calculation tools at our disposal are multiple because they must be adapted to the different destinations and needs to be considered. For example, a standard monocoque calculation model has been developed internally for maximum autonomy of our sales representatives in the field. Our own devices can in some projects be supported by external tools also used by our customers for comparative studies. If necessary, external studies can be incremented in parallel, such as force modelling in a virtual wind tunnel, finite element calculations, etc. The range of available tools also allows us to commission an independent study for increased neutrality of judgment and choice."
