Boat rental between individuals: a British platform sets up in France

The French private boat rental market is attracting a new player. While several local companies are well established, this is a growing British company.

Borrow a Boat enters the French market

The boat rental platform Borrow a Boat has announced its intention to enter the French market. It will take advantage of the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022 show to make this launch official. This desire is part of a context of strong growth of the company launched in 2016. The company claims to have more than 45,000 boats available in 65 countries. Since 2021, Borrow a Boat has expanded into the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, completing 3 acquisitions of competitors: Helm, Barqo and Beds on Board. An IPO is planned for 2022.

Matt Ovenden, founder and CEO of Borrow a Boat, sees France as a key market. "In parallel with our IPO, we believe that a launch in France âeuros one of the world's most popular destinations for yachting âeuros was the natural next step."

Very national rental platforms

After the first years of the private rental industry, which saw the emergence of numerous platforms, the sector has undergone a strong concentration. Only a few players have remained, with French companies strong in their market, tending to make acquisitions abroad, like Samboat or ClickandBoat. The arrival of a foreign competitor on their own market is therefore an event that will be interesting to observe, as well as the reaction of boaters leaving their ads there.
