Develop a more sustainable propulsion solution
The amount of CO2 produced by a single small boat with a 5 hp combustion engine is equivalent to 39 cars on the highway. In Europe alone, more than 36 million people regularly go boating, an activity that is growing by 10%. European governments have already created new policies and tax incentives for green energy boats to minimize pollution and its effects on cities, ecosystems and people. Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Rotterdam have presented ambitious plans to move to clean shipping by 2030.
A hydrogen fuel cell
After the launch of the Wave e-550 electric boat, Magonis is working on other alternatives to traditional thermal propulsion to sail without carbon emissions. In partnership with IREC, the Catalan Institute of Energy Research, and Eurecat, the Catalan Technology Center, they are developing a customized hydrogen fuel cell technology for future units.
Electric boats are used for day trips. For longer cruises, the hydrogen fuel cell would offer an extended range.
This initiative also contributes to Europe's new industrial strategy, the circular economy action plan and the regulatory framework for sustainable batteries, which are all key actions for the European Green Deal.
