Boot Dusseldorf: Trade fair continues despite withdrawal of exhibitors from all over Europe

Grand Soleil at Boot 2020

While the organizers of the Boot Düsseldorf continue to proclaim their intention to hold the inaugural boat show of the year 2022, the clouds continue to gather. Between official withdrawals and rumors, the withdrawals of major exhibitors risk sparsening the aisles and reducing the supply of boats.

A boat show officially maintained

In view of the epidemic situation in Germany, many observers were expecting the cancellation of the Boot Düsseldorf. However, the event's organizers issued a reassuring statement on December 8, 2021, in an attempt to quell the rumors. Emphasizing their responsibility to their exhibitors, they said they would do everything possible to ensure that the show would be safe for both professionals and visiting boaters.

In accordance with the laws of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, access to the salon is restricted to persons who have been vaccinated or cured of Covid. A mask must be worn in the salon and an air exchange system is in place.

Official and unofficial cancellations

Despite this communication, the situation is delicate for the holding of the show. Several boat builders have officially cancelled their participation in the show, such as Nautor's Swan and X-Yachts. At the same time, there are many rumors of the withdrawal of major European and even German players, such as the Bénéteau group, Fountaine-Pajot, Cantiere del Pardo or Hanse. Although they refuse to confirm this, the choices seem to be shared by some countries. Information from transporters confirms the cancellation of shipments of boats to Germany.

Health and economic reasons

The health crisis is obviously the first justification for the sites, wishing to preserve the health of their employees and visitors. However, there are also economic arguments at play. Can the very high costs of a trade fair like Boot Düsseldorf be justified in a context where travel difficulties could reduce the international trade fair to a German-German show? In view of the low inventory levels and long delivery times of the boats, does the brand image alone require such a high level of investment?

Alternative solutions already tested in 2021

While the cancellation of the Boot in 2021 seemed catastrophic to the industry, it would probably be less so in 2022. The experience gained in 2020 and 2021 in alternative marketing methods, digital or through private events, has proved positive. Asked during the Nautic about the risk of cancelling the Boot 2022, given the many new products that were to be presented there, such as Jeanneau's new DB range, Gianguido Girotti, number 2 of the Bénéteau Group, without commenting on the French manufacturer's presence in Düsseldorf, said that he would be able to adapt, as he had already done.
