First boat shows cancelled due to lack of boats to sell to boaters

If covid had been the cause of boat event cancellations in 2020 and 2021, it seems that the yachting boom and supply difficulties could have a similar effect on some boat shows.

NMMA cancels 5 boat shows in 2022

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), the U.S. marine industry association that also runs many boat shows in the U.S., has announced the cancellation of five of them in 2022. The Progressive Insurance shows in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Nashville and St. Louis will not be held. They are being rescheduled for 2023.

Shortage of boats for sale

In justifying the decision, NMMA President Frank Hugelmeyer points to the current state of explosion in the U.S. yachting market and the exceptionally low state of local dealer inventory. "Unprecedented market conditions are forcing event producers around the world to be more agile than ever, while providing the opportunity to connect with visitors in more relevant ways. NMMA is no exception. This announcement comes at a time when we are seeing an extraordinary level of consumer interest in yachting and our shows, amid a lack of product."

Announcements that could spread like wildfire?

For the moment, the phenomenon has not affected other shows. The need for contact with boaters, even without exhibiting the number of boats expected, remains essential for many builders. It is a way to build their order book for the future and to work on their brand image during major events. On the other hand, local boat shows, which are more focused on direct sales during the event, could suffer from this type of phenomenon in other geographical areas.
