Boating is part of the maritime economy. But how much does it weigh in terms of sales and jobs? Illustration with the Brittany region, an emblematic maritime land.

A detailed study of the Breton maritime industry

As a recognized maritime territory, Brittany has asked itself how much this economy really weighs. What are the sectors and how many employees depend on it?

To this end, the Breton networks of chambers of commerce and industry and urban planning and development agencies in partnership and with the support of the Region of Brittany have created the "Observatory of the maritime economy in Brittany. It has just published its latest work. 16 areas have been studied, from national defense related to the sea through submarine cables, fishing and of course boating.

Along with boating, fishing is a key element

This maritime economy is characterized by 4 structuring pillars which are :

  • National defense in relation to the sea
  • Food seafood products
  • Shipbuilding and ship repair
  • Nautical

Together, these 4 areas account for more than 80% of the 70,350 jobs in the maritime economy.

What weight for the nautical industry?

It is organized around four poles which are:

  • The nautical industries
  • Shops and services
  • The marinas
  • Water activities

The yachting sector accounts for 2,354 establishments for 7,237 jobs, or 10.3% of the total. From 2016 to 2019, the boating sector created 858 jobs.

The distribution of jobs among the four components of the nautical industry is quite heterogeneous:

  • The nautical industries account for 37% of jobs,
  • Trade and nautical services 34%
  • Nautical activities 22
  • Marinas 7%.

While the increase in the number of jobs is satisfactory, the same cannot be said for the latest sales figures.

70% of the company managers declare a decrease. The crisis linked to COVID and the successive confinements explain this decrease. For the 1 er in the first half of 2020, there was an average decline of 74.2% and fortunately it was only 50.7% in the second half ème half of 2020.

The tourist frequentation and the possibility of practicing its activity were particularly constrained by the sanitary rules. These two aspects have had strong repercussions on the activities.

In 3 years, from 2016 to 2019 the Breton maritime economy has created 2100 jobs. This dynamism concerns in particular the food seafood, shipbuilding and ship repair and nautical .

This diversity of growth drivers is therefore an opportunity for Brittany, with bridges between the different maritime pillars.
