1st Korean hydrogen fuel cell electric boat
The South Korean shipyard Vinssen unveiled at the Busan Boat Show the production head of its first electric boat model equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell. Called Hydrogenia, it is a 33-foot unit built by this shipyard specialized in small aluminum boats. Capable of accommodating 6 people, the boat has a range of 6 hours to 10 knots according to its builder. The whole of the electric components was provided by the company Danfoss Editron, including the converters.
National Maritime Hydrogen Initiative
The boat was born out of a national program launched by South Korea to encourage the maritime sector's efforts towards ecological transition. The country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 40% in 25 years and 70% by 2050. 870 million dollars have been invested by the local government.
The Vinssen shipyard is counting on a rapid commercial development of its hydrogen boat. The objective is to deliver 50 boats in the first year. These units will also serve as a test for Danfoss for future application on larger vessels in yachting or in professional vessels such as ferries or tugs.
An international dynamic
The arrival of the hydrogen fuel cell in yachting seems to be accelerating. In France, the company Hynova has also launched its first boat in spring 2021. It remains to observe the development of recharging solutions.
