A work-study program for nautical sales representatives
The IUT of Saint-Nazaire is home to a professional license called "nautical commercial framework". This training course is intended for students with a Bac +2 degree and is run entirely on a sandwich course, in the form of a professionalization contract. "We have an average of 15 students per year. Out of a total volume of 600 hours of training, they alternate periods at the IUT, 17 weeks, and those in the company, 35 weeks. I take great care to ensure that the rhythm respects the major periods of the nautical industry and that the students are available for major events such as boat shows," says Olivier Klein, head of the pro nautical license in Saint-Nazaire, who points out that companies are asking him for students for the start of the school year. While the context may make it difficult for some to consider recruiting an apprentice, the work-study student can also be seen as a way to support business development.
Versatile professionals to face the future of yachting
The role of training is important for the future of the industry," says the manager. "We try to give them a mix of business fundamentals in the broadest sense and aspects specific to the nautical market. The final objective is to train the salesmen of tomorrow, but also with an aptitude for taking over or creating companies in the nautical sector. It's important to make them feel comfortable about running a business, because we're going to have to deal with the future boom in the yachting industry!"
Competency modules for active nautical professionals
Although the training is primarily designed for initial training, the professional license can offer solutions adapted to working professionals who wish to improve their skills. "We can offer professionalization periods for employees who have been working for over a year. We can target certain modules that they need, in management or even in language for example. The training is then financed by the OPCOs" explains Olivier Klein.
