From electric boat to outboard motor
Founded in 1995 as The Canadian Electric Boat Company, the company renamed Vision Marine Technologies has been marketing electric boats for recreational use since 2014. It currently has 4 models of boats, the Quiétude 156, Volt 180, Fontail 217 and Bruce 22, equipped with Torqeedo electric motors. After several years of research, the Canadian company has announced the launch of its own electric marine engine solution. Called E-Motion, it enters the pre-commercialization phase on May 1, 2021.
A 180 hp electric outboard motor
Vision Marine Technologies has developed an electric outboard motor with a maximum power of 180 hp. The announced torque is 390 Nm and the weight is 188 kg. The Canadian company has designed its own assembly solution between the electric motor and the baseplate, as well as all the software and control electronics. " The E-Motion eliminates environmentally harmful emissions, drastically reduces noise and wave creation, significantly lowers operating costs, and delivers the power and speed demanded by OEM customers and boaters "says Xavier Montagne, technical director.
Pre-sale for shipyards and boaters
The engine ordering transaction beginning May 1, 2021, is to ensure customer delivery of the E-Motion 180 engine within 6 months. The reservation rate is $1,000. Vision Marine Technologies says it has letters of intent to purchase more than 1,000 units, which it hopes to process in the coming quarters. Original equipment customers are the preferred target for this operation. The manufacturer is counting on its own boats to serve as a showcase for the E-Motion 180, while building a distribution and after-sales service network.
