Moving from RIB to UAV
The idea of using floating drones in marinas is not a completely new one. In recent years, the collection of floating waste was the primary function of the presented robots. At Monthabor, the idea came more from the yachtsman's service. "It's the result of our little sailing experience, as an inexperienced yachtsman who is not always at ease in manoeuvring. Monthabor was born out of the lack of accompaniment, when there aren't always enough staff to show the way when arriving in an unfamiliar port. We thought, why not a drone to accompany from point A to point B? By using an electric drone instead of a zodiac, we reduce fuel consumption and the carbon footprint", explains Christophe Martin, co-founder with his wife Michelle of the start-up.
Making marina agents more available
The Monthabor UAV was enriched with new functions during development and discussions with marina managers. Equipped with 5 cameras, one of which is dedicated to an electronic pointing system for boats and available berths, the craft also has a loudspeaker to communicate with yachtsmen. By adding a net kit, it also allows waste collection. A recharging and cleaning platform is also specifically designed.
"The drone is piloted from the harbour office by wi-fi via the installation of 2 or 3 antennas on the pontoons. It's a new way of working. The port agents are now more available on the pontoons to help with docking or in the office, which is impossible in the summer when sometimes everyone is on the water," summarizes the founder of Monthabor.
The soon-to-be-released drone
The development of the machine started in 2019. After the validation of the proof of concept in 2020, Monthabor is working on its industrial prototype. Winner of the Pays de Loire Region competition on the innovative marina, the company will move to the region. Tests will be carried out in La Turballe. At the same time, the marketing of the product has already been launched.
