Reversible electric outboards as hydrogenerators
e-Propulsion, a major Chinese player in the electric outboard motor market, has unveiled its new products for 2021. The range presents 7 new thrusters, outboard and in base. Evolving from the existing products of the Sprit, Navy and Pod Drive ranges, with power ratings from 1kW to 6kW, they are named Evo.
The major innovation of this new generation is the integration on all the models of a hydrogenation function. This option, offered on the electric inboard motors of many manufacturers on the market, was for the moment absent from the major outboard manufacturers. Sailboats will be able to recharge their motor batteries when their under sail speeds reach between 4 and 10 knots. Dinghy motors can also be recharged when the dinghy is towed behind the transom. The manufacturer claims that it is possible to generate 40W at 4 knots for the smallest model, Spirit Evo of 1 kW.
A wristband circuit breaker for outboards
In parallel with hydrogeneration, the manufacturer has worked on the electrical architecture of its motors, now all with a voltage of 48V. The batteries of the Spirit range float, for more safety during handling, especially on board the tenders.
Often badly accepted by boaters, the classic circuit breaker is nevertheless an essential safety tool in case of man overboard. From 2021, ePropulsion will propose a circuit breaker bracelet, easier to wear, similar to a watch.
1st engines in spring 2021
Details of the engines are not yet known. According to MIDIF, the French distributor of the ePropulsion brand, the first outboards of the Evo range could arrive in France in spring 2021.
