Recommendations on the use of ceramic coatings on boats
The use of ceramic coatings on board boats and yachts is growing. Their characteristics of UV resistance and protection from marine environment aggressions are attractive to professionals. However, their application is not insignificant and the ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) has identified a need in the industry for information and advice on their application and stripping. On 24 November 2020, the association published on its website a free guide on ceramic coatings and their use on large yachts. It details the different types of ceramic products, application procedures and chemical or sandblasting stripping methods.
A challenge for boat paint warranties
Yacht painting budgets are extremely high. In order to objectively validate the quality, measurement procedures have been set up between shipowners and painters. The hydrophobic properties of ceramic coatings prevent the adhesion of a new coat of paint, but their presence can be difficult to check visually. ICOMIA therefore stresses the importance of stripping procedures to avoid problems of warranty on new paintwork carried out afterwards. As it summarises. A $500 sample test could save a $50,000 complete repainting at $50,000 .
