Consolidating Torqeedo as the leader in electric motors for boats
Torqeedo, founded in 2004, is a pioneer in the field of electric boats, and the marine motor manufacturer has established a strong position in the market. Now, its managers, Ralf Plieninger and Michael Rummel, want to strengthen this position. "We are the right company in the right market. There's an estimated global volume of about $8 billion, so there's enough room for us. But, after 15 years of rapid growth, we need some time for consolidation. We did last year about 34 Meuros of r (Editor's note: in 2019), we're headed for 43 Meuros this year and 100 Meuros are planned for 2024. So this has to be digested. That's why we are strengthening our organization internally, but also globally we are increasing our global footprint" Michael Rummel, co-CEO, in charge of finance and business development at Torqeedo. In view of the democratization of electric boats, Rummel says that the brand is ready for the competition.
New inboard and outboard engines
Torqeedo has also announced new products for 2021. After the success of the Travel 1103, the range of portable outboard motors will welcome a new model, the Travel 603. With a power output equivalent to 2 horsepower, the new motor weighs 15.5 kg, incorporating a 500Wh lithium battery.
The mid-power Cruise line will benefit from the TorqLink control system. Developed for the high-powered DeepBlue range, this technology and its peripherals allow for easy communication of all on-board equipment, including a new joystick and multifunction displays.
Finally, a partnership with ZF makes the DeepBlue range available with a Z-Drive subbase for 50kW and 100kW power ratings.
Conquering new markets in the pleasure boat industry
The maturity of electric mobility makes Torqeedo's management confident. The new developments should open up new markets for Torqeedo. "Boaters who buy a Torqeedo motor are choosing an environmentally friendly and climate-neutral product. They want to set an example and make a statement," explains Tommi Salonen, sales manager for BtoC.
Torqeedo's efforts to adapt its products are also aimed at opening up new markets. As a supplier of batteries for the foils of the America's Cup boats, the German engine manufacturer has also developed custom solutions for the British shipyard Spirit Yacht, to manage the electric winches in addition to the propulsion. "The charter fleet is key to getting into volume. With this collaboration with ZF (editor's note: for saildrives), we can open up a new charter market. We're seeing an eco-charter grow," says Philip Goethe, project sales manager
