Closing of the Sunsail base in Palma
The sailing and motor yacht charter company Sunsail is closing its charter base in Palma, on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The site will cease to welcome its yacht charter customers from 31 December 2020. Opened in 2013, the brand base of the Travelopia group, also at the head of The Moorings, had 30 berths in the port of the Balearic archipelago.
A financial and strategic choice for Sunsail
Sunsail's management justifies its choice by the very delicate situation for the entire boat charter sector, particularly the major players in the international charter business, penalized by the limitation of travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic. " Looking ahead to the future of our brands, we have had to review the profitability of our base network more carefully than ever before, and we can confirm that the company has taken the difficult decision to close the Palma de Mallorca base as of December 31, 2020. This difficult decision was made to enable us to continue to successfully navigate through these difficult times as a company while responding to market demand. We remain committed to creating the best sailing holidays for our customers and will continue to add new bases to our extensive portfolio "says Simon Cross, CEO of Sunsail and The Moorings.
According to the local newspaper Majorca Daily Bulletin, Sunsail's monthly budget for its 30 berths at the port amounted to more than 80,000 euros. Faced with competition from Croatian, Greek or Italian marinas, 500% cheaper according to the Spanish president of the APEAM Yacht Charter Association Jose Maria Jimenez, the Iberian peninsula is worried about the collapse of its yachting destination.
