Abandonment of the 1st version of the yacht-club of Les Sables d'Olonne
The semi-public company Sables d'Olonne Plaisance, at the head of Port Olona, have made public their decision to suspend the project in progress for the creation of a yacht club in the port of Vendée. Faced with the upheavals caused by the presentation of the first elements, a public meeting was held on 23 October 2020. This having not been sufficient to convince yachtsmen and local residents, the operator of the port decided in the Board of Directors on 9 November 2020 to abandon this first version of the project and to withdraw their request for a building permit from the authorities. "The project was tied up, but it was badly received by the population. We need to see the copy again," says Mathieu Thébaud, director of Port Olona.
A more concerted approach for the port installations of Port Olona
With a budget of 3 million euros, the initial project planned for the creation of 1600 m² over 3 levels at the entrance to Port Olona. It would have housed the Bénéteau Boat Club, a food shop, the offices of two nautical associations, a club house and a bar-restaurant with terrace. Whilst all the infrastructures of Port Olona, created in 1979 and enlarged in 1988, require investments, SEM Sables d'Olonne Plaisance and the agglomeration explain that they "wish to engage in a wider reflection on all the port installations necessary for the optimisation of the Port Olona basin and to accompany the nautical dynamics of the sea
As far as the yacht club is concerned, the project has not been abandoned, but postponed. It will have to be revised in its architectural form to stick to the maritime and seaside style of the city, at the request of the municipality. Consultation with the inhabitants will be more important to find the best site on the port of Les Sables d'Olonne. "There are new studies to come. We are going to try to communicate a little more and to carry out a reflection on the location of the yacht club" concludes the Director of Port Olona.
