Acceleration of vessel registrations
The ANEN (Asociacion Nacional de Empresas Nauticas), the Spanish boating professionals' union, has published its statistics on the Iberian yachting market in 2017. The figures confirm the acceleration of the recovery of the yachting sector in Spain. The total number of vessel registrations reached 5,275 in 2017, representing an increase of 9.4% over 2016.
Bigger boats
The most important growth was in the market for units over 16 metres, which grew by 53.3%, while remaining limited to 69 units. The registration of vessels between 12 and 16 metres shows an increase of 31% and that of vessels between 8 and 12 metres, 23.8%. Finally, vessels under 8 metres in length, which represent 88.4% of the fleet, increased by 7.3%.
Semi-rigid boats, motor boats and jet skis are the fastest growing markets, but sailing boats are also performing well with 6.8% more registrations than in 2016.
Renting and Catalonia as engines
The charter and boat rental sector boosts Spanish dynamism. 1570 registrations were made for rental purposes in 2017, an increase of 24.7% compared to 2016. The Balearic Islands are the most important home port of the rental fleet.
Catalonia remains the largest yachting market in Spain in 2017, with 22.56% of registrations. It is followed by Andalusia with 16.73% and the Balearic Islands with 16.30%. While registrations increased by 17.82% in Catalonia, they fell by 6.46% in Andalusia and increased by 8.18% in the Balearic Islands.
