A modern motor-sailor
While the outboard motor fifties market is not new, it has developed only slightly. The new Catalan shipyard Nuva Yachts gives it a new lease of life to find a new clientele. The Barcelona Yacht Design (BYD) architectural firm has designed a boat with a resolutely modern and bare shape and style.
A mixed sail and engine program
With this boat, Andrés Cardenas, former CEO of Bavaria and founder of Nuva Yachts, intends to respond to a clientele with multiple desires. The buyers now want to be able to taste the intoxication of motor speed and the calm of sailing. They also want to easily change the body of water for navigation.
For that, the measurements of the Nuva MS6 place it in the road gauge. A 70 HP Yamaha outboard ensures engine performance and a simple rig, with an optional mainsail and gennaker, opens the sail to the general public.
High-end equipment
The careful composite hull construction ensures a contained weight of 1350 kg.
A 170 kg bulb keel ensures stability under sail. An electric mechanism allows it to be completely retracted, bulb included.
To ensure good manoeuvrability on the engine, the rudder is mounted in a dedicated housing.
The mast is made of carbon to limit weight and facilitate disassembly for transport.
A telescopic version to take advantage of the anchorage
If the 45 cm keel draft allows the boat to approach the beach, the yard intends to propose an MS6 Plus version to take even greater advantage of the anchorage. In this version, the rear part of the boat can be widened from 2.47 m to 3.35 m to offer a large sunbathing area.
The prototype is presented at the Palma de Mallorca 2016 Motor Show. A good test to validate the existence of a market for the small size fast sailor motor.
